Mahjong

Mahjong is a classic tile-based game that originated in China, typically played with four players. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to play:
1. Game Setup
- Tiles: A standard Mahjong set consists of 144 tiles, including suits (Dots, Bamboo, Characters), Honors (Winds and Dragons), and Bonus tiles (Flowers and Seasons).
- Players: Ensure you have four players. Mahjong is best enjoyed with a full complement.
- Shuffling: Shuffle the tiles face down and build a wall of 18 tiles wide and 2 tiles high for each player.
2. Starting the Game
- Each player rolls the dice; the player with the highest roll starts.
- Draw tiles to form the hands. Players generally begin with 16 tiles, while the dealer starts with one extra tile (17 tiles).
3. The Objective
- The goal is to form a complete hand, typically consisting of 4 sets (each set can be a triplet or a sequence) and a pair.
4. Gameplay
- The game proceeds in turns. On your turn:
- Draw a Tile: Take a tile from the wall.
- Discard a Tile: Choose one tile from your hand and place it face up in the center.
5. Forming Sets
- Pongs: Three of a kind (e.g., three 5 of Dots).
- Chows: A sequence of three consecutive numbers in the same suit (e.g., 4, 5, 6 of Bamboo).
- Kongs: Four of a kind.
- You may claim a discarded tile to complete a set, but this must be announced.
6. Winning the Game
- A player wins by completing their hand with the necessary sets and declaring “Mahjong.”
- Players reveal their hands to confirm the win.
7. Scoring
- Scoring can vary depending on local rules, but typically points are awarded based on the complexity of the hand and specific sets completed.
8. Ending the Game
- The game ends when a player wins or when all tiles are drawn without a winner.
Tips for Playing Mahjong
- Familiarize yourself with the tile designs for quicker recognition.
- Pay attention to discarded tiles to plan your strategy.
- Practice makes perfect; the more you play, the better you’ll become!
Enjoy your game of Mahjong!
